Susie Carpenter

Thank you so much for visiting my fundraising page. Many of you know that the past couple of years have been extremely difficult for our family. Within an eleven month period, we lost both of our children. We had no idea that our children were living with heart conditions until we lost Cade. Darrell and I are surrounded by amazing family and friends who have prayed, loved, and supported us! We are now looking forward to honoring Cade and Addi in our first annual heart walk!

Cade's Story:
On August 20, 2006 we were blessed with our first child, Cade. From the moment he was born he brought us so much joy. We enjoyed every moment with him. Cade was a precious boy who had such a joy for life. He loved everyone and he loved hard. He had a contagious smile and loved being silly and making people laugh. He also loved to wrestle and play soccer. He was tough and wrestling with Daddy one minute, and on the couch cuddling with Mommy in another. When his sister, Addi, was born, he immediately turned into her protector. It was amazing how much he loved her. He had the ability to make her smile and stop crying at any moment. He was so gentle and kind with her! As a mom, I loved watching every moment of them together.

On April 20, 2011 our lives changed forever. Cade collapsed at the YMCA on the soccer field and died suddenly. We later found out that he had a heart condition that we had no idea existed. We lost our precious son within seconds. We know that he is with his Heavenly Father and enjoying being in the most wonderful place. He lived such an amazing life and touched so many people's hearts. He left us never experiencing pain, worry, or heartbreak. As much as I miss him, I am so grateful that God gave him to us...even if it was for a short period of time. So much of who we are is because of him. He is our little angel and because of him were able to give his sister a second chance at life.

Addi's Story:
After Cade passed away, our next step was to get Addi's heart checked to make sure she was okay. At the beginning of June, we took her to Texas Children's Hospital and she had an echo cardiogram (ultrasound) and an EKG. It was at this first appointment that we found out that she had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with restrictive physiology. Her heart did not function the way it should. Because of this, we were told that she needed a heart transplant. We feel pretty confident that she has what Cade had.

In October of 2011, Addi had a heart cath and we officially began the process of getting her on the heart transplant list. We met with several different doctors and she was put on the list on November 8th as a status 2. This meant that she was not in desperate need of a new heart, but she definitely needed one. The transplant team also left it up to us to decide whether we wanted to implant a defibrillator to "play it safe" while we wait for her heart. The doctors recommended that we should based on our family history, and we agreed. On January 20th she had her first major surgery and had a defibrillator implanted.

On March 22nd, Addi had an episode at TCH while getting her blood taken which resulted in her being put on life support. We thought we had lost her. However, the Lord gave us one more pretty amazing week with her. Each day she made tremendous progress, even the doctors told us it was a miracle and they couldn't believe what they were seeing. However, on March 30th, her sweet little heart couldn't take any more and she went to be with Jesus and her big brother!

Darrell and I say that Cade and Addi were just so precious that God couldn't wait to have them in Heaven! Faith is an amazing thing! Because of God we are able to continue on with our life knowing that we will be with Cade and Addi again.
